5 Tips For Managing Staff

Dear Business Partner,

I am better and back in the office. Thank you for all your messages of support last week. This week I would like to talk about Staff Management.

HERE ARE 5 THINGS I HAVE LEARNED THROUGH THE YEARS

  1. One size does not fit all – I have seen many times that the approach that you use for one employee does not necessarily work for the next employee. We need to understand the human behaviour to get the best out of each employee.
  2. Do not neglect team motivation – we tend to put a lot of focus on the individual, but in the end, it is a team effort. Do not forget to motivate the team. And remember money is not the only motivator.
  3. Two sides of the coin – we must be assertive and keep learning. Employees are very aware of their rights. Your managers must be trained about what is allowed and what not. On the other side we must also remember to have empathy with our employees. Empathy goes a long way.
  4. Small things become big things – always sort out the small things. Do not neglect this part. While it is still a small matter one can discuss it, the moment it becomes a big thing, and believe me, I have seen how things can escalate in NO TIME, then it will take a lot more of your time.
  5. No one and nothing are perfect – it is okay for employees to make mistakes if they learn from it. Unfortunately, some employees are just never wrong and don’t take accountability, these are the ones that you must let go.
