Let me help you be compliant with the relevant labour laws, processes, and procedures. This can save you HUGE amounts of money and a lot of stress.
HERE ARE A FEW IMPORTANT QUESTIONS AND TIPS:
- How do you deal with new employees? Do you take them through the process? Yes, often there are not enough time to spoon-feed someone because time is money, but there are basic processes you can follow. This is where the induction process plays a big role or assign the new employee to a ‘’buddy’’ at work. When do they sign their contracts? This should be even before they start or at least on the first working day. Spend time going through the contract and explain to them what to expect. No exception, everyone must have a contract.
- Are your supervisors, office managers and or line managers equipped or skilled to follow the right steps? Make sure you guide your supervisory employees with regards to the right labour processes to follow. This is often where money gets lost. Do not underestimate unhappy employees. I would suggest having an information session for your employees where you explain the rights of the employer and the rights of the employees.
- How do you deal with the team member not pulling their weight? Yes, you know, that one. Do you know the difference between misconduct and performance and what processes to follow? Do you just tell them to go? I completely understand that is what you want to do, but you will get yourself in a lot of trouble and unnecessary financial losses because that employee will go to the CCMA and claim an unfair dismissal. Last week I had no less than three unfair dismissal cases reported to me by unhappy employees. Their employees thought they did the right thing, but they were not up to date with the latest labour laws. These claims can be up to 12 months salary! I would much rather see you invest that type of money to invest in the growth of your business.
