Dear Business Partner,
I ask a lot of business owners, what is the worst part of owing a business? And the most frequent answer I get is “managing people”.
Managing underperforming employees or toxic employees is probably one of the most critical tasks of any manager. The impact of this underperformer or toxic employee is draining YOUR energy, and it has a huge impact on the team.
Understandably most managers avoid this part of their duties. In most cases the manager will say: “I don’t know what to do anymore”, or “there is nothing more I can do.”
THIS IS WHERE I WANT TO GIVE YOU A ROADMAP TO SUCCESS
1. INVESTIGATE: I always preach – boundaries and expectations. Make sure that the employee is aware of the expectations. One of the most effective ways to do this is to communicate with the employee.
2. COMMUNICATE: Do not only communicate once per year. When you set the expectations make sure your employee agrees to them. Do not keep referring to the problem, they feel bad already.
3. RETHINK: Rethink how you manage that employee? Maybe you need to change your approach. Yes, I know, not necessarily what you want to hear, but I want to invite you to try it.
4. AGREE: Here, detail is important.
5. LET GO: If you have done all the above in the correct legal way, then sometimes it is time to let go of that employee. We must also think of the other employees in the team.
Sometimes you just do not have the time or the skill to deal with people problems. Lucky for you that is what I love to do. Let me help you through this process.
