I want to encourage you today to be consistent with workplace discipline. Yes, I know, it is not what you signed up for, but it can be the make or break in a disciplinary scenario. A chairperson will always consider the consistency in which discipline has been applied and must take it into consideration when determining a sanction. When your employee lodge a constructive dismissal at the CCMA, what is one of the questions that will be asked? Was discipline applied consistently.
What does it mean?
- It means that all employees who commit the same misconduct must be treated the same way. This does not mean they will necessarily receive the same sanction.
- It means that the employer must act every time when a rule is transgressed.
Tips:
- Make sure your employees know the rules and the implication of transgressing the rules.
- Keep record of your employees’ disciplinary records.
And remember, HELP is just one email away.
